  • How do we know that people have learned not just about environment and economic sustainability but about equity and sustainability
  • How do learners from different cultural and social backgrounds learn about sustainable tourism?
  • What does sustainability mean in different cultural contexts? Are there cross-cultural differences in sustainable tourism and learning – does it mean anything/different things in different contexts?
  • How do we convey the notion that perceived realities need to be challenged while operating in institutions that live and foster the realities that are currently dominant? Can free-thinkers exist and be encouraged within the walls of structured learning environments?
  • Exploration of the gap between theory and practice in various contexts (e.g. academics, tour guides, etc)
  • How do we reconcile an industry that focuses on growth with sustainable philosophy and practice? Facilitating changes in mind-sets?
  • What are the threshold concepts in sustainable tourism?
  • Are students motivated to learn about ST and if yes, what motivates them?
  • What motivates consumers/tourists to learn about sustainable tourism
  • What are the barriers that prevent consumer motivation?
  • How can sustainable issues (theory) be put into practice. From knowing to action.
  • How can we involve students/people to feel more responsible for learning and acting in a sustainable way? Active participation/learning
  • What is it we want students to know about ST?
  • What is that students can actively do once they have learnt about sustainable tourism?
  • How can we involve trainers and teachers in this (see above)?
  • Are there ways to provide practical experiences to students in order to provide first hand experiences in learning for sustainable tourism?
  • Who are the learners of sustainable tourism – who is the person who is committed rather than not, what drives a person to act and learn about sustainable tourism?
  • What are the attributes of the teachers of sustainable tourism – psychographic, lifestyle attributes, etc?
  • We need to understand the alternative financial models that can be used by SMEs  to support sustainable practice in industry.
  • How can knowledge transfer to industry be facilitated, improved and enhanced (e.g. understanding financial models, CSR, delivery of knowledge to industry, generating two way channels of communication, etc)
  • How can learning be used as a tool for encouraging more sustainable visitor behaviors (i.e. transformative travel and learning)?
  • To what extent is learning an accumulative effect of a particular sort of experience?
  • Effectiveness of pledging as a form of behavior change? Cultural context of pledging?
  • Longitudinal studies about the learning process
  • Which teaching methods and tools are most successful in increasing student learning about sustainable tourism?
  • How is success measured in sustainable tourism education?
  • What is the difference between learning for sustainable tourism and learning in other areas of knowledge? Is there a difference? If so, what is it?
  • Is there a brand for sustainable learning?
  • What makes an expert sustainable tourism practitioner? How does the knowledge production process work? How can we enhance the development of expert knowledge?
