This paper introduces the rationale for a study which explores the relationship between sense of place and sustainability at Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park (TARP), Sabah. Sense of place encompasses an understanding of the meaning bestowed upon a physical, geographical location by local residents and also visitors. The paper proposes that preservation of sense of place enables tourist destinations to retain a uniqueness of character, and allows the local community to maintain their sense of belonging. Although a promising framework for understanding how tourism development may change the character of a destination, sense of place has been little utilised for this purpose. The paper suggests to ensure sustainable tourism development, sense of place of the local community should be given due consideration in any tourism development proposal. Tourism development that alters places may alter residents’ sense of place.
