Despite several declarations, policies and regulations that seek to protect their rights, people with disabilities still encounter several constrains that impede their full participation in society, and, in particular, their access to and enjoyment of recreation and tourist experiences. These constrains are related not only to physical barriers caused by the lack of accessible infrastructure but more important, to societal attitudes, including patronizing, prejudice, social exclusion and discrimination. Studies have found that among the main barriers experienced by tourists with disabilities and reduced mobility are inadequate physical infrastructure, lack of awareness and training of hospitality and tourism staff, and poor and unreliable provision of information about accessible tourism products and destinations (Darcy, 1998; Poria, Reichel, & Brandt, 2010; Richard, Pritchard, and Morgan, 2010).
