As an important global market by purpose of travel, visiting friends and relatives, VFR, is closely associated with the history and development of international migration patterns which are a more permanent form of travel. Further, the importance of migration goes beyond VFR tourism to total tourism. Despite this widely acknowledged link, this paper highlights concerns that VFR tourism is under-valued by the industry (Backer 2011) and neglected by researchers. The migration-tourism link and its implications for VFR flows have also been unduly neglected by researchers.
