This paper discusses some economic, social, and environmental “hard issues” for the travel and tourism (T&T) industry with the aim of shedding some light on little discussed aspects of industry corporate social responsibility (CSR) with a particular focus on the US industry. Economic issues include the relatively low wages within T&T, the tax and benefit implications of tipping, and the role of US T&T within the current immigration debate. Social issues include the sale of pornography and social aspects of immigration. Environmental issues include the lack of “green” aspects in new hotels being constructed in the US, relative lack of active participation in benchmarking activities by US hotels, and the need for the industry to come to grip with the environmental aspects of the “travel” portion of T&T and specifically with air travel. It is hoped the paper will serve to provide some stimulus for research in these areas as well as possibly attention by the T&T industry.
