As a contribution to BEST Education Network ThinkTank V, Managing Riskand Crisis for Sustainable Tourism, the following paper has been prepared in two parts. The first part of the paper focuses on the idea that an appropriate model can be developed specifically to analyze and manage risks to the tourism industry, based on insurance and emergency management precedents.

The second part briefly outlines to the development of curricula on modeling and tourism risk management, including Learning Objectives, Concept Definitions, and Review Questions that could be incorporated into a core curriculum on sustainable tourism.

A third component of the author’s contribution will be a separate paper presented at the ThinkTank in June which outlines the conceptual framework described in Part One above, as it applies in practice to what is termed “Critical Risk Infrastructure” for small and medium-sized tourism businesses.
