Can "Slow Travel" Contribute to Sustainable Tourism?

Slow travel as a research field has increased in popularity in the last decade. The concept started to gain attention through online communities, and tourism researchers have become interested in the possible benefits that slow travel may have on global tourism’s contribution to climate change. The term ‘slow travel’ is however fraught with ambiguity and attempts to shape a definition have thus far not resulted in a commonly accepted definition. However, it is currently agreed by researchers that some aspect of the holiday journey must include a slow pace, decided upon by the traveller, thus creating a contrast to busy and stressful everyday life in western societies. The focus on slow travel as a concept is used as an antecedent to this research, for the sake of exploration of time perspectives and individual freedom. The aim is to add to understanding of the slow travel phenomenon, and produce a theory which is descriptive rather than prescriptive.
