Call for Papers

Dear Colleagues,

Please find attached the EXTENED CALL FOR PAPERS for the 2017 BEST EN Think Tank.

Extended Due Date: 13th March 2017

Final Papers Due: 22nd May 2017

We warmly invite you to the BEST EN Think Tank XVII to be held in Mauritius, from June 14-17, 2017 in conjunction with the International Centre for Sustainable Tourism at the University of Mauritius.

The theme of Think Tank XVII is “Innovation and Progress in Sustainable Tourism”. The term ‘sustainable tourism’ emerged in the early 1980s building on earlier concerns about the negative impacts of tourism and linking tourism to the wider sustainability movement. Despite 30 years of discussion of tourism and sustainability in academic and government documents, recent reviews suggest that there is considerable room for improvement in the practice of sustainable tourism.

In 2007 the BEST EN Think Tank, hosted by Northern Arizona University and held in Flagstaff in the USA, focused on innovation for sustainable tourism. It is timely to re-examine the concept of innovation in sustainability and reflect on how innovation has contributed to the sustainability of tourism in the last decade. Linking the review of innovation to progress in sustainable tourism more broadly can help assess whether and how innovation has contributed to or resulted in making tourism more sustainable. Further, a consideration of future directions and contemplation of the nature of progress also supports a renewed examination of sustainable tourism itself.

Participants are welcome to present both state-of-the-art empirical and conceptual research papers providing the basis for inspiring, critical and constructive sessions. We encourage multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary submissions. The range of sub-topics related to innovation and progressin sustainable tourism includes:

  • Innovation in sustainable tourism – cases, issues, and challenges
  • Assessing progress in sustainable tourism – barriers, evaluations, measurement
  • Understanding tourism impacts
  • Contributions of tourism to destination sustainability
  • Teaching and learning approaches in sustainable tourism innovation
  • Sustainable tourism and governance, especially in peripheral, emerging and small island destinations
  • Theoretical and methodological approaches for researching sustainable tourism
  • Product, marketing and experiential innovation in sustainable tourism
  • Social entrepreneurship and community-based innovations in sustainable tourism
  • Other topics relevant to the Think Tank theme and/or sustainable tourism education

We invite potential authors to submit either an abstract or full paper for consideration by the Think Tank’s scientific committee. Early submission of abstracts and papers is encouraged and will expedite the review process for those needing advanced notification of the status of acceptance. The extended deadline for both abstract and paper submission is March 13th, 2017.

Accepted submission and presentations will be published under the Creative Commons license on the BEST EN website and in the Think Tank proceedings.
